Assessment
This section contains addresses the need for teachers to give effective and meaningful feedback. Both summative and formative assessment tools are included. Examples of summative assessment tools are rubrics, sample paper evaluations, and the breakdown of standardized test scores. Formative assessment tools include systems for providing both teacher and peer feedback.
Contents of this section: This document illustrates the ranges of scores on the Compass test, and their correspondence to English course placement at WCC. WCC offers five English courses, English 8, 18, 19, 21 and 22, which do not offer college credit. A student's score on the standardized Compass test determines his or her initial placement in the English courses offered by WCC.
WCC instructor Lance Uyeda introduced the SQOOCH protocol and language for giving peer feedback in a writing workshop. SQOOCH handout was developed by professor Krista Hiser, from Kapiolani Community College.
This handout gives an example of a typical English 100 final exam prompt, sample student essays, scoring rubric, and discussion of the scores assigned to the sample essays.
Turnitin.com is a subscription service that checks students' papers for plagiarism. Many Hawai‘i high schools and colleges subscribe to this service. This
document contains Turnitin's Common Core State Standard high school rubrics for Argumentative, Informative, and Narrative essays for grades 9-10 and
11-12.
