Welcome to Windward Community College's Core to College Site!
Welcome to a joint project of WCC and the DOE--a website by teachers for teachers! Thanks to a P-20/ Gear-Up grant received by Windward Community College, we have developed what we hope will be a useful resource for improving education and student success in our schools. Our goals are:
• To increase communication among DOE and WCC teachers to improve student skills in reading and writing as it relates to the Common Core State Standards;
• To present “real-world” expectations and policies at the college level to raise awareness among students;
• To share “teacher-to-teacher” practical, successful classroom strategies, assignments and “best practices” at DOE and college levels to stimulate and inspire teachers to meet Common Core standards and increase student engagement;
• To create an ongoing, sustainable resource for the Windward O‘ahu school district for future student success at all levels.
Many of the materials on this site were presented at a Windward Core to College Alignment Workshop on April 26, 2013 at WCC. English teachers from Castle, Kahuku, Kailua and Kalaheo High as well as King, Kailua and Kahuku Intermediate attended, along with faculty from WCC’s language arts department.
The featured morning speaker was Chad Miller, 2012 DOE Teacher of the Year and a former Kailua High School English teacher who now serves as director of teacher education and professional development in the Philosophy for Children (p4c) program based at UH-Manoa.
Each of the seven break-out sessions was led by a team composed of one WCC and one DOE teacher, where possible. We planned the program to send the message “We’re all in this together so how can we address these challenges by sharing ideas and resources?”
The result was a day spent discovering how much we have in common at all levels of education and how much we can learn from each other. We learned a great deal from listening to the conference participants, and in our final report, included a Summary of Recommendations for further action. Our hope is that this site will help to continue that dialogue for the future of all our students.
